While we were in Guangzhou we would eat breakfast at the buffet on the lower level of the White Swan Hotel. Every morning we watched boats putter by with one or two people collecting seaweed off the surface of the Pearl River. They raked it into the boats with forks and nets. We never found out what happened with the seaweed. Although this is most likely not related, the breakfast buffet at our first hotel in Tokyo served seaweed. We tried it once. I really liked the food in China and Japan but as for seaweed once was enough – maybe even once too much.
