Mantis Close Up

We went back to Sodalis Nature Park again yesterday and came across the largest preying mantis I have ever seen. We estimated it between 5 and 6 inches in body length. Needless to say, we got some full-frame looks at this savage creature. In the first two images below the mantis cleans its talons presumably from a previous kill. The third image is rotated to show the details of this mantis’ body. Later on we watched it devour a bumblebee – that was spooky!

    1. Thank you! No, I don’t have a real macro lens. I used an 18-200 mm telephoto zoom for these shots. I also have a 55-210 mm telephoto zoom that is a bit sharper but has a longer focus distance. I’m still working on my technique too but these lenses work well for me.
