These grainy scans from April 2003 show a small corner of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in northwest China. Long ago the Spice Trail passed near here where caravans traveled between China and the Middle East. But today little of that is left save for these shepherds tending goats out in the desert. There was no grass and no water in sight. Yet, against all the odds, these folks like so many before them have survived in this area for centuries living the same way then as now.
