Floral Friday

Our peonies peaked in late May – we have both white and pink varieties. The ants inundate the pods until they open up into these large and dense petal masses. The peony can attribute its name to Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius, the mythical Greek god of medicine and healing. As the story goes, when Asclepius became jealous of his pupil, Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower. The peony is the State Flower of Indiana.
