Another Admiral

Continuing my run of Admiral butterflies this week, here we have a Red Admiral. I spotted him down the road from yesterday’s Blue Admiral. The wings on this one are beat up – I guess that indicates some age on this butterfly. This was the only Red Admiral I saw; the Blue Admirals were everywhere.

  1. This is pretty much exactly the same as our Red Admiral. I’ve been told by experts that the deeper cuts to the wings are made by birds’ beaks as they try to capture and eat them. This individual has at least one on each wing. The rest of the wear is, as you say, down to age.
