We came across this old hay rake last summer. By our estimate, it had sat here around at least fifty years based on the walnut tree growing between its rails; probably it sat here longer than that. In any case, someone made a decision about the future. These horse-drawn hay rakes were popular up until the 1920s when tractor-pulled rakes took their place in the fields. Perhaps a farmer decided to make that change. Or maybe a farmer chose to leave farming and go into some other trade. Then again, maybe the farmer passed away and his descendants elected not to continue farming. Whatever the decision that was made, this rake remains here where it has sat for many years, the land is now a part of a nature park, and we can only wonder whose decision impacted the future in this little spot of the world.
