Hummingbird Moth

This is one of the more bizarre creatures we have around here. They flit about just like hummingbirds, but when you look closely you see antennae and a furry body. It is the hummingbird moth. We see them all summer long.

  1. We get these moths too but they are very rare. In my garden I have only ever seen two or three in more than thirty years. I think that if they occur both sides of the Atlantic, they must be a very, very ancient species, which existed before the Atlantic came into being.
