Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Two Very Different Items or the Number Two – Bells

Last year we saw the Terra Cotta Warriors Exhibit at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. The Warriors stood majestically in their exhibition cases throughout the show area. In one section, we saw this set of bells with a small mallet for the kids to try. The caption plate explained these were replicas of the bells found near Wuhan, China, in the recently discovered tomb of the Marquis Yi of the Zeng State. The Marquis Yi lived around 450 B.C.

Back in 2001, we actually saw the real thing – the real bells extracted from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of the Zeng State. The excavators had cleaned them up and then used them for a one-time-only concert – we have a CD of that very impressive musical program. They did not sound anything like the toy imitations at the museum! The authentic bells, nearly 2,500 years old, now stand on display at the Hubei Provincial Museum in Wuhan.
